The Diabetes Education Centre (DEC), based at the Branson Ambulatory Care Centre, offers group programs and individual counseling for people with diabetes and their families.
With a focus on best practice interventions, the care provided at the DEC is based on clinical best practice guidelines and developed to support the Ontario Diabetes Strategy.
The centre serves adults with type 1, type 2, and gestational (during pregnancy) diabetes and pre-diabetes. The DEC also offers a paediatric diabetes program, providing individualized teaching, counselling and support to children and teens with diabetes and their families.
With proper education and self-management, blood sugar levels can be maintained close to normal and delay the onset or progression of preventable diabetes complications
Care at the Diabetes Education Centre is provided by an endocrinologist, nurses, dietitian and social worker.
All patients have an assessment followed by an opportunity to attend six education classes. Individual sessions are also available. We also offer support groups. Topics covered include: understanding diabetes; meal planning; medications; exercise; stress management and other lifestyle issues.
