InnovationEX showcases the best in healthcare transformation

GTA hospitals share latest initiatives with focus on continuous quality improvement

TORONTO, January 29, 2014– Prominent members of the healthcare industry, hospital representatives and members of the public attended InnovationEX on Wednesday morning to learn about some of the most recent innovations in the community healthcare setting.

The inaugural event, hosted by The Joint Centres for Transformative Healthcare Innovation (Joint Centres), was an exposition of innovations and exchange of ideas, featuring 25 pioneering ideas from the six member hospitals of the Joint Centres. An Idea Café held throughout the event invited guests to suggest their own ideas and approaches to solving some of today's most pressing questions in the healthcare setting, such as increasing influenza immunization compliance, hand hygiene and encouraging innovation from boardroom to bedside.

“InnovationEX is a platform for the Joint Centres to explore opportunities to drive quality and improvement in our health system,” said Rob Devitt, president and CEO, Toronto East General Hospital and Chair of the Joint Centres. “There is a desire to continually improve the health care system and this event encouraged everyone to think about their own role in making that a reality.”

The event, hosted at North York General Hospital, included remarks from the Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, as well Devitt and the president and CEO of North York General, Tim Rutledge.

“Events such as InnovationEX are an illustration of the exemplary work being done at the bedside to help transform the healthcare system,” said Minister Matthews. “It is inspiring and uplifting to see so many people, from across these incredible organizations, coming together to create measurable change for the people of Ontario.”

Innovations ranged from technological advances, to operating room practices, and the inclusion of patient and family advisors across hospital practices.

Guests had the opportunity to log in to an app on their smart devices to get a virtual tour of the expo, rate each exhibit and innovation, and join in the virtual conversation.
