Running is how Karyn Popovich, Vice President, Clinical Programs, Quality and Risk, Chief Nursing Executive, clears her mind. Karyn has recently begun running marathons. “When I tell people I like running, they are always surprised that I find it peaceful.”

Her love of cottage life has allowed Karyn the perfect training ground for triathlons. “Each summer I do one or two triathlons, I enjoy swimming, biking and running,” she says. “It's something we can do as a family.”

Karyn has worked at North York General Hospital (NYGH) for 36 years, but her career has been anything but stationary. Starting in 1981, she was a surgical nurse in the orthopedic and plastic surgery unit before moving to the emergency department where she spent most of her career as a clinical nurse, manager and director.

Today, Karyn is vice president for all clinical programs across the hospital and has a large focus on quality and safety, and delivering high quality and accessible care to patients and families.

“It's a big but very exciting portfolio” she says. Knowing you can make a difference in people's lives, the transformation of health care and continually working to make it better for patients and their families are a few of the reasons Karyn loves her work. She credits the encouragement and support she received at the hospital, as well as the opportunities availableto move into many different positions, for her extensive career at NYGH.

Her passion for advancing the quality of health care was recognized in 2011 when Karyn became a Surveyor for Accreditation Canada, where she plays an integral role in driving national system performance improvement.

As Chief Nursing Executive, Karyn is supportive of the nursing profession and all health professionals; she builds and fosters a professional practice environment that is supportive of interprofessional education and collaborative learning.

“I've always been an advocate for nursing, there are lots of opportunities — the scope and roles have really changed and I've seen the nursing profession grow over the years,” says Karyn. “We celebrate Nursing Week every year at North York General and I am privileged to work here and really proud of our nurses.

When Karyn isn't at North York General, you are likely to catch her on the pavement training for her next race.
