North York General Hospital's Transfusion Medicine Laboratory has been awarded the Long Standing Certificate by the Ontario Regional Blood Coordinating Network for its overall reduction in outdates* of red blood cell units across the province.

This important recognition highlights the efforts led by Leonita Aguiar, Technical Coordinator, along with a team of core lab technologists who follow best practices in transfusion medicine.

Manuel Giraldo, Pathology and Core Lab Manager, reported that North York General outdated only 13 red cell units (0.4%-below the provincial rate) from Aug. 2016–July 2017 and showed an 18% reduction in red cell utilization — demonstrating excellent management of our red cell inventory.
