The ESSENCE of Education Scholarship — A faculty development course at NYGH

Are you looking to enhance your expertise in the area of education scholarship?

ESSENCE is a longitudinal faculty development course for physicians and other health professionals designed to develop education scholarship knowledge and skills. Through a series of workshops and mentoring initiatives spanning one year, participants will be supported through the design and execution of a scholarly project related to education.

ESSENCE is a collaborative partnership between the Office of Education Scholarship at the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto and the Centre for Education at North York General Hospital (NYGH).

What is involved?

The course consists of seven three-hour workshops every six weeks (Wednesdays 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. January 2018 to December 2018, with a break for the summer) on topics that build on the core skills and knowledge required to complete a scholarly education project. The workshops will be facilitated by experts in the field and provide opportunity to work and reflect on individual projects.

Each participant will be assigned a local Advisor (Clinician Educator) and have access to consultation with an Education Researcher. Participants will be expected to work through an education project – from idea to dissemination (presentation). In the intervening time between workshops, participants will be expected to meet with their Advisors and complete specific tasks related to their project in preparation for the next workshop. Participants are expected to attend the workshops and complete the course work.

What are the goals of the program?

The goals of ESSENCE are to develop participant basic competencies in the area of education scholarship as well as to advance/produce a scholarly project by the end of the course. In addition, it is hoped that the course will help create a community of practice amongst participants and support their roles as educators.
