Dr. Nicholas Pairaudeau Receives Award of Excellence
Dr. Nicholas Pairaudeau
Dr. Nicholas Pairaudeau has received the Award of Excellence for the Ontario Region from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC). The award was presented June 5 during the society’s 66th Annual Clinical Meeting in Montréal.

Dr. Pairaudeau, an Obstetrician & Gynecologist at North York General Hospital since 1976, was recognized for his contributions to continuing medical education. He has taught courses in China and hosted physicians and administrators from China at our hospital.

Dr. David White Receives Award of Excellence

Dr. David White, Chief of Family & Community Medicine and Program Medical Director at North York General Hospital, is a recipient of the 2009 Awards of Excellence from the Ontario College of Family Physicians.

Dr. White received the award in recognition for his excellence in teaching and for his administrative roles at our hospital and with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in pandemic planning for community-based practices.

The award was presented at the Annual Scientific Assembly of the Ontario College of Family Physicians on November 26, 2009.

Drs. Elyse Lackie and Kirsten Smith Recognized for Teaching Excellence

Dr. Elyse Lackie and Dr. Kirsten Smith were honoured by the University of Toronto's Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the Faculty Development Day on September 30.

Dr. Lackie received the 2009 Chair's Award for Undergraduate Teaching. It is presented to a faculty member who has a primary appointment in the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and who, within the first 10 years of their faculty appointment, has demonstrated a sustained interest in undergraduate education and has made a significant contribution to the Department's Undergraduate Education Program.

Dr. Smith was presented with the 2009 Award for Teaching Excellence in recognition of her contribution to the undergraduate education program at North York General Hospital.

Dr. Titus Owolabi Receives Planet Africa Award

Dr. Titus Owolabi, Chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Medical Director, Maternal Newborn Program, is the recipient of the 2009 Planet Africa Award for Professional Excellence.

The award is presented to a professional in any field that Planet Africa honours for outstanding achievement. Dr. Owolabi was selected for 1) his medical leadership at NYGH and other hospitals; 2) establishing a hospital in Nigeria, and 3) his lifelong service in medicine to the community.

Dr. Owolabi received the award at the Planet Africa Gala on October 24 in Toronto. The mission of the Planet Africa Awards is “to identify and recognize deserving individuals, organizations, businesses and agencies that make a profound difference in the lives of people of African heritage. This is done by honouring and celebrating their hard work, excellence and professionalism. They are role models, especially for youngsters.” Learn more about Planet Africa

Dr. Owolabi came to NYGH as Chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology in January 2000.

Dr. David Baron Elected President of Ontario Association of Gastroenterology

Dr. David Baron,
North York General Hospital's Chief of Medicine and Program Medical Director, was elected President of the Ontario Association of Gastroenterology (OAG) for 2009-2010 at the Annual General Meeting in Toronto on October 25. Dr. Baron is also Vice-Chair of our hospital's Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) and is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto’s Department of Medicine.

Strongly committed to educating other physicians in gastroenterology and related areas, he is an examiner at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, course director at Mount Sinai’s update on digestive diseases, and a course organizer for the OAG’s Scientific Session.

Dr. Thomas Ungar Receives National Education Leadership Award

Dr. Thomas Ungar, Chief of Psychiatry and Medical Director, Mental Health Program at North York General Hospital, is the recipient of the 2009 Paul Patterson Education Leadership Award from the Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA).

The award is presented annually to a psychiatric educator, who, in responding to change or leading in new directions, makes a significant contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate, continuing professional or public education. Dr. Ungar received the award on August 29, 2009, during CPA's 59th Annual Conference in St. John's. The Canadian Psychiatric Association is the national voice for Canada's 4,100 psychiatrists and more than 600 psychiatric residents.

Dr. Ungar was recognized for developing Mental Health Minute, an innovative, web-based multimedia approach to public education. The Mental Health Minute website is aimed primarily at patients and public learners and provides easily accessible, evidence-based and consumer friendly mental health information. There are topics on everything from workplace mental health and depression to agoraphobia and how to talk to your care provider.

The information is offered in a multitude of online learning formats including teleseminars, podcasts and YouTube video minutes. These minutes use a non-traditional infotainment approach to present mental health information and hopefully connect with people's everyday lives. Mental Health Minute has been well received by both the public and mental health professionals, and a number of front-line consumer-oriented mental health organizations have linked their websites to this public education site.

Report Highlights Our Successes

The Ontario Health Quality Council's 2009 Yearly Report profiles North York General Hospital's reduction of cancer surgery wait times and patient flow initiatives.

Highlighted as examples effective quality improvement initiatives are our efforts to 1) improve patient flow in the emergency department; 2) reduce cancer wait times; and 3) ease the flow of patients from hospital to long-term care. Our work has generated significant media attention.

Dr. Kathy Chun Receives American College of Medical Genetics Award

North York General Hospital's Director of Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics, Dr. Kathy Chun, was awarded the 2009 Signature Genomic Laboratories Travel Award at the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) 2009 Annual Clinical Genetics Meeting March 28, 2009.

The award was started in 2008 to honour an outstanding young student, trainee or junior faculty ACMG member. Dr. Chun's impressive work was chosen as a platform presentation during the ACMG Annual Clinical Genetics Meeting. In recognition of the selected presentation, Signature Genomics covers the travel costs for the recipient to the ACMG meeting.

Dr. Adrian Brown Recipient of Dr. Carl Nimrod Award

Teaching excellence also recognized with two awards from University of Toronto

Dr. Adrian Brown, Obstetrician and Gynecologist at NYGH, has received the Dr. Carl Nimrod Award from the Association of Professors of Obstetrics & Gynaecology of Canada (APOG). APOG brings together professors of obstetrics and gynaecology from the 16 Canadian universities involved in both pre and post-doctoral education and continuous medical education.

The award is given annually to a Canadian OB/GYN physician for an outstanding contribution to education. In selecting the recipient, APOG also considers the recipient's enthusiasm and attitude in the field of medical education.

The award was established in honour of Dr. Carl Nimrod, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Ottawa, a significant contributor to SOGC educational activities, and a renowned educator. He died in 2006.

In addition to the Dr. Carl Nimrod Award, Dr. Brown was recognized for being an outstanding educator at our hospital by the University of Toronto. On October 15, 2008, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine, recognized him with two teaching awards at the Faculty & Alumni Professional Development Workshop and Celebratory Dinner. Dr. Brown was a recipient of the new Master Teaching Award and the 2008 Bayer Healthcare Awards for Teaching Excellence.

Since July 2006, Dr. Brown has been the Faculty of Medicine's Director of Distributed Medical Education (DME) at the University of Toronto. This role was created in 2006 to facilitate communication between the University of Toronto's community partners and the Medical School and promote the vision for distributed medical education at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine. As Director, Dr. Brown has general overall responsibility for the coordination and support of activities related to the delivery of medical education in the University of Toronto's community affiliated partner organizations.

Dr. Kevin Katz Appointed to Provincial Infectious Diseases
Advisory Committee


Dr. Kevin Katz, North York General Hospital's Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control, has been appointed to the Infection Prevention and Control Subcommittee of the Ministry of Health's Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee (PIDAC).

PIDAC was established by the Ministry of Health in 2004 to provide independent, specialized advice to the Chief Medical Officer of Health and the Ontario Ministry of Health on infectious disease matters.

The committee plays an essential and specialized role as a single standing source of expert advice on infectious diseases for Ontario.

PIDAC brings together a high level of expertise from relevant fields across Ontario's health care sector, including respected experts in infection control, infectious disease, medical microbiology, public health, epidemiology, and occupational health and safety.

Kevin's appointment on the PIDAC Infection Prevention and Control Subcommittee will begin on March 1, 2009, and will run until 2012.
