Outstanding Teachers Recognized by University of Toronto

Six educators at North York General Hospital's have received teaching awards from the Department of Family & Community Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. The annual awards were formally presented at the Walter Rosser Academic Day on Friday, April 28, 2007.

North York General Hospital is the first Greater Toronto Area community teaching hospital to sign a new affiliation agreement with the University of Toronto that further strengthens their long-standing partnership in educating future health-care professionals. Read the news release.

 

Outstanding Physicians Receive Awards

Two outstanding North York General Hospital physicians have received Ontario Medical Association (OMA) Life Membership Awards in 2007— Drs. Brian Hoffman and Stan Lofsky. Dr. Lofsky has also received a Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Honorary Membership Award.

OMA Life Membership is awarded to members who have made an outstanding contribution to the work of the Association, medical science, or common good in Ontario, and have reached the age of 65.

Award recipient Dr. Hoffman is Chief of Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Adult Mental Health Program at North York General Hospital. He has received teaching awards from the University of Toronto's Department of Psychiatry and the American Psychiatric Association, and a Public Service Award from the Canadian Mental Health Association.

He is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, and has also been the Chair of the OMA Section of Psychiatry and the OMA Special Committee on Mental Health.

Dr. Hoffman has made over 150 presentations to professional audiences. He has published 60 journal articles, two books, and six chapters on psychiatry and the law. He has consulted on over 1,600 civil litigation cases, approximately balanced between plaintiff and defense.

The second award recipient, Dr. Lofsky, is a North York General Hospital-affiliated family physician providing obstetrical care. He is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, and teaches family practice residents at the hospital. Dr. Lofsky served on the OMA Board of Directors for 16 years, and is currently a Delegate to CMA Council and OMA Council. He is also a member of the OMA Section on General and Family Practice Executive.

Dr. Lofsky has served on numerous OMA Committees with an emphasis on health policy, women's issues, tariff, and physician human resources. He is a member of the Central Tariff Committee and is also dedicated to maintaining the Ontario Antenatal Record. He participated in the 2005 Ontario Cervical Cancer Guidelines revision and has published trends in Ontario Obstetrical Human Resources.

Dr. Lofsky also received the CMA Honorary Membership award for his work in advocating for augmenting family medicine and physician resources in Ontario, among other achievements.
