Awards & Recognition 2008 Dr. Val Rachlis Joins College of Family Physicians
of Canada Executive At its Annual General Meeting on December 1, 2008, The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) confirmed the nomination of Dr. Val Rachlis to its 2008-09 Executive Committee. Dr. Rachlis has been a family physician at North York General Hospital for the past 34 years. He will be on the Executive Committee for the next five years. In November
2010, Dr. Rachlis will begin a one-year term as Chair of the Board and
will become President in November 2011. During 2004-2005, Dr. Rachlis served as President of the Ontario College of Family Physicians. He was named one of Canada's Family Physicians of the Year for 2003-2004 by CFPC. Since 1984, Dr. Rachlis has served in numerous leadership positions at our hospital, including Director of Primary and Integrated Health Care Initiatives. A recognized leader in primary care, he has worked with physicians since 1995 to improve the delivery and coordination of family care in our community. Dr. Rachlis is a physician with Toronto's first Family Health Network launched in February 2003 the Fairview Family Health Network. Founded in June, 1954, the College of Family Physicians of Canada is the national medical association which supports family physicians in providing high quality health care to their patients. Dr. Adam Dwosh Presented with Teaching Award The award was presented at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine, Annual Undergraduate Education Faculty Development Workshop on September 12, 2008. Dr. Dwosh, a teacher in our Family & Community Medicine undergraduate program, participated in the Family Medicine Longitudinal Experience (FMLE), an innovative observership program offered through the University of Toronto, Department of Family & Community Medicine. It is a new initiative consisting of a six ½-day shadowing experience for second year medical students using the expertise of community family physicians in the GTA.
Physicians are admitted/elected to fellowship after receiving membership (by examination) of the Royal College for a minimum of 12 years. The award implies a continued contribution to the specialty and maintenance of standards and practice. It is a mark of senior status of the profession in the UK. Dr Tunde-Byass passed her membership examination in 1995. She has an interest in medical education and has received teaching awards.

Marla Shapiro To Receive Award of Excellence The Awards of Excellence recognize CFPC members who in the past 12-24
months have made an outstanding contribution in a specific area pertaining
to one or more of the following areas: patient care; community service;
hospital or health care institutions; College activities (National or
Chapter); teaching, research or other elements of the academic discipline
of family medicine. In particular, the College noted Dr. Shapiro's lifelong
commitment and dedication to family medicine.

York General Hospital Wins National Environmental Award "It is a great honour to be chosen for this award," said Bonnie Adamson, President and CEO of North York General Hospital. "We strive to provide compassionate, quality care to patients and their families in a manner that minimizes adverse environmental impacts on human health and our natural environment." The CCME Pollution Prevention Awards program was established in 1997 to support CCME's emphasis on preventing pollution at the source, rather than cleaning it up or treating it after it has been created. In 2003, CCME established a partnership with the Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention (C2P2) to present the awards. Up to seven companies or organizations are recognized each year for their overall pollution prevention efforts, innovations and reductions in greenhouse gases. Full story

University of Toronto Awards Recognize Hospital's Outstanding Teachers in Family & Community Medecine Congratulations to our NYGH physicians for winning several awards at
the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto
Annual Awards Celebration in April 2008. Their outstanding teaching
and dedication to students and patients has benefited the entire hospital.
