Bonnie Adamson, RN, BScN, MScN (Admin.), CHE, FCCHSE

President and CEO

Bonnie Adamson has been the President and CEO at North York General Hospital since August 2002. Prior to this appointment, she was President & CEO in the Huron Perth Hospitals Partnership, an eight hospital network in southwestern Ontario. For many years prior, she held several senior leadership positions at the Victoria Hospital and London Health Sciences Centre in London, Ontario.

Mrs. Adamson is a Fellow of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives and Diplomate of the American College of Healthcare Executives. She serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Studies (ICES) in Toronto and is incoming Chair of the National Board of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives after serving for five years on the Board.

She is active on many Ontario Hospital Association and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care committees and has authored numerous articles in health care leadership.

Jennifer Bowman, MA
Vice President

Jennifer Bowman joined the North York General Hospital team as Vice President in January 2008.

She has worked as an independent consultant in strategic planning, policy development and analysis, project management and government relations, in both the public and private sectors. In addition, she served as Vice President, External Affairs, at MDS Inc. and as Director, Government Relations, at Glaxo Wellcome Canada.

Prior to this, Jennifer held various positions within Ontario's Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for more than a decade, providing leadership and advising on strategic policy and program development.

Tim Rutledge, MD, CCFP (EM), FSCP
Vice President, Medical & Academic Affairs

Over the past eight years, Tim Rutledge has participated at various times on the Leadership Team in a number of roles including Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee, Medical Leader, Strategy Liaison — providing leadership in physician engagement — and most recently as Acting Vice President, Medical & Academics.

He was named our first Director of Medical Education in 2007 after serving as Chief and Medical Director of the Emergency Services Program since 1996.

Tim is an Associate Professor in the University of Toronto's Department of Family and Community Medicine. Following his medical studies and residency in both family and emergency medicine at the University of Toronto, he began his career as an emergency physician at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Tim helped develop our Emergency Medicine Update, the largest annual Emergency Medicine conference in Canada, and has published numerous articles in the field.

Donna McRitchie, B.Sc., MD, M.Sc., FRCSC
Chair, Medical Advisory Committee


Donna McRitchie is Medical Director of Critical Care and Division Chief of General Surgery at North York General Hospital. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto, and the Central LHIN Critical Care Lead.

Donna trained in General Surgery at the University of Toronto after completing a Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences. During her surgical training, she obtained a Master's of Science at the Institute of Medical Science. She did a fellowship in Trauma at the Shock Trauma Institute at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, then a second fellowship in Critical Care at the Harvard program in Boston. After returning to Toronto, Donna was a General Surgeon, Trauma Surgeon and Intensivist at
St. Michael's Hospital for six years before coming to our hospital in 2000.

Karyn Popovich, RN ENC (C) BHS MHS CHE
Vice President & Chief Nursing Executive

Karyn Popovich began her career here almost 30 years ago as a nurse with our Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery team. Throughout the years she has taken on leadership roles in many areas of the hospital, including Emergency Services and Family and Community Medicine.

She was most recently Acting Vice President & Integrated Quality Leadership. In her previous role as Program Director for Medicine and Critical Care, Karyn was a champion for multiple LEAN process improvement events, such as patient flow through the Emergency Department and General Internal Medicine, Hospitalist care model, Skin and Wound Care, and Medication Administration.

Karyn completed a Master's of Health Studies in 2004 and is a Certified Healthcare Executive with the Canadian College of Health Service Executives.

Janak Jass, MHSc., CHE
Vice President, Strategy & Organizational Performance

Janak Jass brings over 20 years of health-care management experience to this new position of Vice President, Strategy and Organizational Performance. His diverse experience includes the management of large portfolios that cut across clinical and support services.

As the hospital's Chief Strategy Officer for nearly two years, Janak led the organization in refreshing its strategy, working closely with our leadership team and consulting extensively both internally and externally.

Prior to joining the hospital in 2005, Janak held senior positions at Humber River Regional Hospital, Four Counties Health Services, and the York Community Care Access Centre. He is currently on the Board of the New Heights Community Health Centre.

Janak holds a Master's degree in Health Administration from the University of Toronto and an Honours Science degree with a focus on Planning from the University of Waterloo. He is a certified member of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives.

Dean Martin, B.Admin., MHA, CMA, CHE
Vice President, Finance and Information Technology/CFO

Dean Martin joined North York General Hospital in March 2010 after serving as Vice President, Finance and Support Services/Chief Financial Officer at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) since 2006. He brings to this role proven success in strengthening and leading organizational finance and decision support functions.

His 20-year career in health-care financial leadership has included positions at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Trillium Health Centre, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Central Vancouver Island Health Authority in British Columbia.

Dean holds a Master's Degree in Health Administration from the University of Ottawa as well as a Bachelor of Business Administration from Brock University. He is also a Certified Healthcare Executive (CHE) and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA).

Terry Pursell, HBA
President & CEO, North York General Hospital Foundation
Terry Pursell was most recently Vice President of Global Business Development and Communications for Right To Play, a humanitarian organization that uses sport and play as tools for development in 23 countries.

Previously, Terry was Associate Dean, Advancement at the University of Toronto and Campaign Director at York University.

Terry joined the North York General Hospital Foundation in February 2010. With over two decades of experience in the public sector, she looks forward to working with members of this community and our partners to make North York General Hospital the destination of choice for philanthropic investment.

Sandra Smith, MA, CHE
Chief Human Resources Officer

Sandra Smith joined North York General Hospital in May 2008 as the Director of Human Resources and became Chief Human Resources Officer in November 2009.

She has led a variety of initiatives at our hospital including Workforce Planning, developing our first People Plan Strategy, and implementing our Talent Management program. Sandra has corporate accountability for people practices across the organization, while delivering a people strategy that supports the continued realization of the organization's strategic goals.

Prior to joining our hospital, Sandra worked at Trillium Health Centre for approximately 15 years. Her varied experience includes moving from a nursing background and transitioning over to the People/Human Resources side of health care.

Sandra completed a Master's of Art in Leadership in 2007 from Royal Roads University in British Columbia, and is a Certified Healthcare Executive with the Canadian College of Health Service Executives.

Tony Humphries, M.Eng.
Chief Capital Planning Officer

Tony Humphries has over 25 years of health-care facility management experience. He joined North York General Hospital in 1987 as the Facility Manager at the Branson Site. Since then, Tony has held numerous positions related to facility management, facility design, project management and master planning.

In his current role as Chief Planning Officer, Tony is leading the strategic facility redevelopment of North York General Hospital. This includes a master program and master plan that will address the long-term acute health-care needs of our community for the next two decades.

Tony holds a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Memorial University in Newfoundland.
