Volunteering at
North York General Hospital Foundation

Our volunteers come from diverse cultural and social backgrounds and range in age from 16-85 years. They are people who are trying to learn new skills, members of religious congregations, former patients who want to give back, homemakers and retired individuals with time to give. They are men, women and young people who truly care about embracing and enhancing the lives of our patients and those in our community.

Sydney Brassel was a long time and dedicated Foundation volunteer since 1999. Sydney was a volunteer coordinator for the Foundation's Coins for Care coin box program. Before Sydney started with this program in 1999 there were only a handful of boxes in the community. Today, over 350 stores participate in this program which has generated over $40,000! Coins for Care volunteers are responsible for placing coin boxes in stores, coffee shops and other businesses, picking up the boxes and bringing the donations to the Foundation. "There is no pay involved, but the work is steady" Sydney says with a chuckle and a gleam in his eye. He believes the program can generate thousands of dollars every year with the help of other volunteers willing to donate a few hours a week. Sydney is a wonderful ambassador for the Hospital and Foundation. To become a Coins for Care volunteer contact the Foundation @ (416) 756-6944 or foundation@nygh.on.ca.

Jocelyn, Vincent and Shelley, are three of our student volunteers who dedicate their time to the Foundation. They are responsible for counting and rolling coins in preparation for deposit. Students also prepare mailings and perform other administrative tasks. Volunteering at the Foundation is a great opportunity for the students seeking to fulfill community service volunteer hours.

Cathy Ortiz, Foundation Stewardship Officer, assists volunteer Bernard Pinto, a retired accountant, in the preparation of a direct mail campaign. Bernard has been an important and incredibly hard working Foundation volunteer since 2002.

Cathy began her association with the Foundation as a volunteer in 2002. When an opening for Foundation Development Assistant became available Cathy applied and has been an integral part of the Foundation ever since, and was recently promoted to Stewardship and Donor Relations Officer.

Sean Vardoulias of Sean's Esso (Don Mills/Sheppard Avenue) pictured here. Sean has a real community spirit! Over the past few years, Sean has generously held a charity BBQ at his Esso station for North York General Hospital which has raised over $11,000. Funds from the annual event are directed to the Freeman Centre for Palliative Care. Many thanks to our friend and caring neighbour Sean Vardoulias and all the staff at Sean's Esso.
