Journey Into Well-being: A six-week workshop for adults with
chronic health conditions
 
This six-week workshop is for adults with chronic health problems such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and other conditions.

POWER - Promoting Osteoporosis Wellness Through Education, Exercise and Resources   

This is a seven-week education, nutrition and exercise wellness program for older adults with age-related osteoporosis, a brittle bone disease that is the leading cause of hip fractures. This program provides older adults diagnosed with osteoporosis with strategies to slow down their bone loss, prevent falls, and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle for as long as possible. The program is offered twice a year, in the spring and in the fall.

Be BoneSmart at home!

The POWER Program of Toronto, in partnership with the Osteoporosis Society has developed a 38-minute video that features exercises to maintain bone strength, improve posture and balance, strengthen muscles and increase flexibility. In addition to the exercise program, the BoneSmart video includes a section on how to prevent falls, a major cause of fractures for people with osteoporosis. It is available for $34.49 plus shipping. Living Well with Parkinson's Program  
This is an eight-week education and exercise program designed for people with Parkinson's and their caregivers provided by an interdisciplinary team. Individual medication review and physical assessment will also be provided to each client.

Where: Seniors' Health Centre, 2 Buchan Court, North Entrance (1 traffic light east of Leslie, north of Sheppard Ave.)

Post-treatment Breast Cancer Support Group
This new group started in fall 2009.
What you need to know:
• Participants must be post-treatment by start of group (finished with chemo, surgery, radiation — oral hormone therapy okay)
• OHIP covered - missed appointments will be billed to the patient
• Must commit to 8 weeks

Family Education Group

If you have a family member with a mental health issue, this support group offers the opportunity to learn and talk confidentially with other family members who have similar concerns. North York General Hospital and F.A.M.E. (Family Association for Mental Health Everywhere) present the following sessions.

Support Group for Family Members of Youth and Young Adults Affected by Substance Use Issues

This 8-week educational/ support group is offered by the Transitional Aged Youth Substance Use Program (16-24 years of age), part of North York General Hospital's Mental Health Program.

The support group takes place at the Branson Site, 555 Finch Ave. West, Monday evenings, 6-7:30pm, beginning March 1, 2010. More

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

This eight-week, physician-led group meets for 2.5 hours on Friday afternoons at the General Site, and consists of instruction in various meditation practices and gentle Yoga. MBSR is indicated for individuals with chronic pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, and other chronic medical conditions. MBSR is also useful for caregivers and other health professionals in coping with their stress levels. It requires an active commitment to one's own health, and to doing an hour of homework daily.

Orientation session dates are posted as they become available.

Family and Community Education Sessions on Substance Use/Addiction

The North York General Hospital Addiction Program regularly offers family and community education and information sessions at the Branson Site. Dates if upcoming sessions are included here as they become available. All are welcome

Topics will include:

Definitions of substance use, misuse, abuse, and addiction
What is taught to the client who is attending the program
How can I help someone who has a substance abuse problem or addiction, and/or how can I support someone who is in recovery
What kinds of things are not helpful in addressing a substance abuse problem or addiction, in myself or someone I know
How can I access help
