Community Health & Wellness
North York General Hospital promotes the health and wellness of our
community by offering a variety of informative sessions and seminars.
This six-week workshop is for adults with chronic health problems such
as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema
and other conditions.

This is a seven-week education, nutrition and exercise wellness program
for older adults with age-related osteoporosis, a brittle bone disease
that is the leading cause of hip fractures. This program provides older
adults diagnosed with osteoporosis with strategies to slow down their
bone loss, prevent falls, and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle
for as long as possible. The program is offered twice a year, in the
spring and in the fall.

The POWER Program of Toronto, in partnership with the Osteoporosis Society
has developed a 38-minute video that features exercises to maintain
bone strength, improve posture and balance, strengthen muscles and increase
flexibility. In addition to the exercise program, the BoneSmart video
includes a section on how to prevent falls, a major cause of fractures
for people with osteoporosis. It is available for $34.49 plus shipping.

This is an eight-week education and exercise program designed for people
with Parkinson's and their caregivers provided by an interdisciplinary
team. Individual medication review and physical assessment will also
be provided to each client.

This new group started in fall 2009.
What you need to know:
Participants must be post-treatment by start of group (finished
with chemo, surgery, radiation oral hormone therapy okay)
OHIP covered - missed appointments will be billed to the patient
Must commit to 8 weeks

If you have a family member with a mental health issue, this support
group offers the opportunity to learn and talk confidentially with other
family members who have similar concerns. North York General Hospital
and F.A.M.E. (Family Association for Mental Health Everywhere) present
the following sessions.

This 8-week educational/ support group is offered by the Transitional
Aged Youth Substance Use Program (16-24 years of age), part of North
York General Hospital's Mental Health Program.
The support group takes place at the Branson Site, 555 Finch Ave. West,
Monday evenings, 6-7:30pm, beginning March 1, 2010. More
This eight-week, physician-led group meets for 2.5 hours on Friday
afternoons at the General Site, and consists of instruction in various
meditation practices and gentle Yoga. MBSR is indicated for individuals
with chronic pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, and
other chronic medical conditions. MBSR is also useful for caregivers
and other health professionals in coping with their stress levels. It
requires an active commitment to one's own health, and to doing an hour
of homework daily.

The North York General Hospital Addiction Program regularly offers family
and community education and information sessions at the Branson Site. Dates if upcoming sessions are included here as they become available. All are welcome
