North York General Hospital launches French-Chinese Information Line to Improve Access to Services

Toronto, January 17, 2005 — North York General Hospital is launching a French-Chinese Information Line to improve access to its services for its French and Chinese speaking patients and visitors. The Information Line will make it easier for patients and their families to access our services and to get answers to common questions people have when coming to the hospital.

By providing this service in French and Chinese, North York General Hospital is committed to providing culturally sensitive health care services to meet patient's needs. Danielle Hu, who is fluent in French, Cantonese and Mandarin, staffs the French Chinese Information Line. Danielle studied at the University of Foreign Studies in Guangzhou (Canton).

"The suggestion for the Information Line arose after consultations with the hospital's Chinese Advisory Committee and members of our multicultural community. The Information Line is one of many ways the hospital is working to meet our patient's needs in a culturally appropriate way through their entire life span," say Bonnie Adamson, President and CEO.

The Information Line will help French and Chinese speaking communities find answers to the common questions about the hospital, like visiting hours, parking rates, our services and reaching patient rooms. Danielle, who also staffs the Interpretation Line in the Hospital, can also set up interpretation requests if a patient is not comfortable speaking in English and know they have an upcoming appointment at the Hospital.

"The hospital has also recently improved its services for our multicultural community with several new initiatives that we're very excited about," says Linda Jolie, Director of Volunteer Services and Community Relations. These initiative include testing staff interpreters, training more staff as interpreters, connecting to Language Line Services for emergency situations and dedicating a staff member to the Interpretation Line and the French-Chinese Information Line.

The French and Chinese speaking community can reach the French-Chinese Information Line by calling (416) 756-6522.
