Anthurium Foundation Donates Almost $2,000 to North York General Hosptial's Cancer Services

TORONTO, March 31, 2005 —The Anthurium Foundation, an organization whose mission was to promote the awareness and prevention of cancer for the Caribbean communities in the Greater Toronto Area, donated $2000 to North York General Hospital’s cancer and oncology services in March 2005. North York General Hospital is one of the largest cancer care providers in the GTA with particular expertise in breast, colon and prostate cancers.

“Cancer care is one of our hospital’s four major clinical priorities. This donation will help the hospital as we work to expand our cancer care services including screening and diagnosis capability in the following three areas: breast cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer,” says Ingrid Perry Peacock, President & CEO, North York General Hospital’s Foundation. “We offer a complete continuum of cancer care to patients with cancer from screening, to treatment to follow-up care. We thank the Anthurium Foundation for their contribution toward cancer care in our community and in particular on behalf of those seeking care at the hospital.”

The Anthurium Foundation, which closed in 2004 by order of the Board of Directors and was formerly the Doctor Daphne DaCosta Memorial Foundation, assisted with the delivery of health care both in Canada and Commonwealth Caribbean. Part of the Anthurium Foundation’s mission was to promote the awareness and prevention of cancer. This is the final grant from the Anthurium Foundation.

North York General Hospital has several initiatives in process including: increasing the number of breast surgeries; for colon cancer, developing an early referral service for high-risk patients and increasing surgical services, especially for patients who qualify for minimally invasive surgery; and expanding services for those with prostate cancer with more diagnostic tests in medical imaging and urology and increasing outpatient clinic.

North York General Hospital, including the IODE Children’s Centre, has been a compassionate, caring member of our community since 1968. As a community teaching Hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto, we provide high quality patient care in an environment built on a foundation of safety. Our core service areas include Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Maternal Newborn, Mental Health, Family & Community Medicine, Emergency, Genetics, and Long-Term Care.
