Ontario's Second Largest Provincial Birthing Centre Proudly Announces the Arrival of New Mother & Baby Unit

TORONTO, April 21, 2004 — Georgina Veldhorst, Vice President Patient Services & Chief Nursing Executive, on behalf of Bonnie Adamson, President & CEO, North York General Hospital, announced the official opening of the Mother & Baby Unit at North York General Hospital, on April 7, 2004.

"As Ontario's second largest birthing centre, we are dedicated to patient- and family-focused care for the more than 5,000 babies delivered here annually," said Veldhorst. "In our dual role as a community and teaching hospital, this Unit will provide countless opportunities to a whole new generation of physicians, midwives, nurses, and other health care practitioners to experience first hand how the delivery of high quality, seamless obstetrical care makes such a difference to new families."

After extensive renovations and upgrades, the Hospital's Fetal Assessment, Labour and Birth, Mother and Baby and Neonatal Intensive Care Services are now integrated on one floor of the institution. With these services together, North York General Hospital strengthens its focus on delivering superior obstetrical services to patients from the first trimester to post-partum.

"I'd like to thank our team for their strong effort to make this day happen," Veldhorst said. "I'd also like to thank the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for helping us invest heavily in our patients' futures - we're now well positioned to continuously improve what and how we do things as a leader delivering high quality care for moms, babies and their families."
