North York General Hospital Wins Prestigious National Award

Toronto, June 11, 2008 — North York General Hospital has been awarded the prestigious 2008 Canadian College of Health Service Executives (CCHSE) 3M Health Care Quality Team Award for the hospital's outstanding work in improving patient experiences through a unique patient flow initiative.

"We are honoured and delighted to be chosen as the recipient of this award," said Bonnie Adamson, President and CEO, North York General Hospital. "Improving patient flow through the hospital is a priority because it increases patient safety, positively impacts patients' and families' experiences and improves staff satisfaction. Additionally, efficient flow of admitted patients from the emergency department to an inpatient bed improves overall access to care."

This award recognizes three important elements — innovation, quality and teamwork. 3M Canada encourages institutions and health care providers to embrace quality management by developing innovative approaches that bring about sustainable improvement. In winning this award, North York General Hospital highlighted its unique approach to improving patient flow by utilizing Lean methodology to understand and improve hospital processes. The hospital's leadership culture transformation provided the fabric into which the Lean philosophy has been woven, leading to organizational caring, capacity and commitment for improved patient flow. In Lean methodology, teams of individuals, including internal and external stakeholders, come together for each process improvement initiative to find strategies to remove the non-value added activities from a process.

North York General Hospital identified four major areas where patient flow needed to be addressed: 1. Within the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency (ED); 2. Between the ED and General Internal Medicine (GIM); 3. Within GIM; and, 4. In partnership with Community Care Access Centres (CCACs).

The award also provides Canadian health executives with an excellent opportunity to recognize team members who have applied the quality process to create measurable benefits in their network of services and programs.

"Our ongoing leadership culture transformation has empowered and energized our staff and physicians to embark on this quality journey; our health care teams have the freedom - and the responsibility - to contribute to creating positive change," Adamson said. "I am very proud to acknowledge the collective wisdom of our health care teams and the community partners that have driven these changes and sustained these improvements."

The Canadian College of Health Service Executives 3M Health Care Quality Team Award was presented to North York General Hospital at a CCHSE luncheon in Saskatchewan on June 3, 2008.
