Postgraduate Program North York General Hospital is one of the most popular training sites for University of Toronto Family Medicine Residents (students). This program is designed to prepare family physicians for the challenges of community practice in an increasingly complex and evolving health care system. Our program stresses working in both the community and the hospital where residents see a variety of patient problems while working one on one with a staff physician. Each year, about 25 family medicine residents receive their core training at our hospital. Residents are from the University of Toronto, Department of Family and Community Medicine, and are medical school graduates who are training to specialize in family medicine. The program is two years in length and leads to eligibility for certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Residents in the postgraduate program work with a family physician a half-day per week throughout their two years and for 2-4 months on an intensive basis. They receive training in community-based family practice settings as well as hospital-based specialties, including obstetrics, paediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, geriatrics, psychiatry and emergency services. Residents take part in a variety of community-based experiences including palliative care, nutrition, dermatology, social work, sports medicine and substance abuse. Residents from other hospitals and other programs also do core and elective rotations at North York General Hospital.
