Family and Community MedicineFamily Practice Teaching Unit Our community teaching hospital has always adopted an academic focus and we are dedicated to educating future family physicians. The Family and Community Medicine Program's Family Practice Teaching Unit is based on the 4th floor of the General site (4001 Leslie St.). The Family Practice Teaching Unit is an essential part of Family and Community Medicine at North York General Hospital and includes a multidisciplinary health care team of family physicians, residents, nurse, dietician and social worker. Residents work alongside staff family physicians, gaining experience in family practice team care and support. The unit is open Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with extended evening hours on Wednesdays from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Patients and their families are seen in the unit by one of the family physicians, similar to an outside family practice office in the community. Under the guidance of our staff physicians, the hospital offers training in both our Undergraduate program (for students still in medical school) and in our two-year Postgraduate Program (for students who have completed medical school). The students and residents work alongside, and under, the supervision of family physicians in many areas of the hospital such as obstetrics and emergency services. North York General Hospital is the most popular and highly sought site for training in family medicine by students/residents in the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine. Family Heath Team Model A new initiative will be training students/residents in a family health team model within the Family Practice Teaching Unit. In the family health team approach, different health care professionals (for example nurses, social workers, dietitians) are brought together to co-ordinate the best care for patients. If required, a patient can easily and conveniently access the services of team members. To accommodate the increased number of students who will be admitted into medical school and train them in this new multidisciplinary family health team model, we are making renovations that will create larger areas for seeing patients in our Family Practice Teaching Unit. |
