Celebrating Diversity The Seniors' Health Centre has a proud history of serving patients and residents from many backgrounds. In fact, in 1990 we were awarded 40 multicultural long-term care beds to reflect the cultural diversity of our community. Respectful of this diversity, we collaborate with Multicultural Services and Spiritual & Religious Care to offer programming that keeps our long-term care residents active and involved with their families, friends, community, and cultural/ religious roots. Over 40% of residents are first generation Canadians bringing with them a wide diversity of cultural/ethnic traditions. Seniors' Health Centre has established cultural partnerships with the Ismaili-Muslim, Black and Caribbean, Armenian, and Spanish-speaking communities of Toronto. We also work closely with Jewish Family Services to serve our many Jewish residents. We nurture consultation and collaboration between staff, families and residents. Our self-elected Residents' Council and Family Advisory Committee act as an advisory group and have meaningful impact on the home's operation. Volunteers play a special role at the Centre. With more than 150 members, our volunteer team helps out with services that really make a difference. They take residents on outings, hold special teas and one-to-one visiting. They also assist our seniors with such popular leisure activities as gardening, baking and reading. |
