Adult Mental Health People with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety or schizophrenia who are in crisis may be admitted to our inpatient unit. Treatment includes assessment, stabilization and discharge to appropriate follow-up care. Group and individual counselling treatment are offered as needed. Our goal is to assist people with mental health problems to remain in the community, using hospitalization only when necessary. We are connected to our community and offer services that reflect the special needs of the population we serve. As a result of our partnerships with community agencies, many of our patients can receive care while staying at home, rather than being admitted to a bed in the hospital. Holistic approach North York General Hospital takes a holistic approach to care that serves the needs of the whole person: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Mental health professionals are available to see patients who are being cared for in other parts of the hospital, but also have a mental health problem or are experiencing a severe emotional reaction as a result of their medical condition. We understand the important role that family members and caregivers play in patients' lives. Family participation in their loved one's care is strongly encouraged during a patient's stay. Day Hospital Adults experiencing acute emotional distress who have enough support to continue living at home may be treated in our Day Hospital at the General site. They come to the Day Hospital from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every weekday. Treatment is a combination of group therapy and individual counselling, with other types of therapy if needed. Your family doctor or therapist can refer you to the Day Hospital. |
