Cancer Surgery
We have one of the largest cancer care programs in the GTA and an outstanding
reputation for diagnosing and treating patients with cancer. Cancer
Care is one of North York General Hospital's four areas of focus and
our services are growing even more.
Providing integrated and continuous care to our patients is fundamental
to the Surgical Services Program. We work closely with the skilled professionals
across our hospital programs to provide you with the very best health
care. If a service you need is not available in our hospital, we will
help you to access it elsewhere.
The volume of colon cancer surgeries we perform is among the highest
in the GTA. Wait times for colon cancer cases average under three weeks.
Every general surgeon on staff does colon cancer surgery - ensuring
high quality care and our ability to handle a large number of cases.
A treatment option for colon cancer includes minimally invasive surgery
(laparoscopic), where appropriate.
We are increasing the number of endoscopies (a test that looks inside
the body) we do so patients can access health care services faster.
The hospital's Laboratory Medicine Department provides diagnostic support
to oncology and medical imaging teams.
North York General Hospital has recognized expertise in prostate cancer.
We offer a complete continuum of cancer care to patients from screening
and diagnosis to treatment and follow-up care.
In June 2007, the Gale
& Graham Wright Prostate Centre opened at the Branson SIte.
It was the first prostate centre in the province to offer timely diagnosis,
information, expertise and resources in a community hospital setting.
We are an acknowledged leader in breast cancer care in the GTA.
Our physicians use breast-conserving surgery whenever possible, combined
with the use of sentinel node biopsy. When needed, plastic surgeons
are involved in reconstructive procedures.
The state-of-the-art BMO
Financial Group Breast Diagnostic Centre offers all the services
needed for patients with suspicious breast lesions, or breast anomalies.
In a unique approach, we can test patients, provide results, and draw
on the resources of an interdisciplinary health care team of expert
surgeons, radiologists, nurses, social workers and pathologists exceptionally
fast, usually within 48 hours. This quick diagnosis helps to alleviate
anxiety in patients. Once a breast tumour is identified, the wait for
surgical treatment is usually less than three weeks.
The Centre can assist patients with the deeply personal and psychological
effects of his or her situation through the emotional support given
by the nurses, physicians and volunteers.
The Department of Gynecology is comprised of 16 gynecologists including
one subspecialist focusing on gynecologic cancer.
Women with gynecologic cancer are prioritized to receive care promptly.
