Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are still the leading cause of blindness, but with advances in today's technology and equipment, cataracts can be removed earlier.

The Cataract High Volume Centre (CHVC), located at North York General Hospital's Branson Site, is improving the vision and wait times for thousands of people waiting for cataract surgery.

The centre is a new model of care delivery which evolved through collaborations among three hospitals to reduce wait times and improve outcomes.

Launched in September 2006, the Cataract High Volume Centre is a partnership of North York General, Markham Stouffville, and Humber River Regional hospitals.

Find out how the Cataract High Volume Centre is reducing wait times by reading the cover article in the winter 2008 issue of HealthConnection, published by North York General Hospital and Foundation.

The decision to operate is made with the patient based on the degree of vision impairment and the impact on their quality of life.

Two operating rooms are shared by ophthalmologists from the three hospitals. This collaboration has meant standardizing procedures and processes, such as surgical equipment and medication, to enhance patient safety and patient flow.
