Surgery
Inpatient and Outpatient Surgery
Most of our surgeries, about 80%, are performed on an outpatient basis
- patients can go home that same day.
Most inpatients and some day surgery patients use our pre-admit clinic.
The clinic visit is scheduled a week or so before surgery and allows
completion of paperwork, blood tests and anesthesia consults. As a result,
patients are able to sleep at home the night before their surgery rather
than being admitted the day before for tests.
Patients coming in for day surgery register and prepare themselves in
our new Surgical Day Care area.
Most of our surgery takes place in 12 state-of-the-art operating rooms
outfitted with the latest in minimally invasive equipment.
Our modern Ambulatory Procedures Unit opened in 2004 and features separate
paediatric and adult treatment and waiting areas. Day surgery beds have
tripled in numbers from 13 to 39. The Unit performs, on average, 9,000
gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures, and numerous urologic cystoscopies.
After surgery most patients go to the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit. Once
they have recovered from their anesthetic, outpatients go to the Day
Surgery area where they can be attended by a family member until they
are ready for discharge home.
Following surgery, inpatients are transferred from the Post Anaesthetic
Care Unit to one of three units: a 34-bed orthopedic unit (4 West),
a 28-bed general surgery unit (4 North), and a16-bed surgical unit with
a gynecological focus (5 South). All of the surgical units strive to
provide patient and family focused care within a multidisciplinary team
approach.
