Volunteer Spotlight: Tolsa Greenberg

NVW 2023 - Tolsa

Tolsa held an administrative position at the Toronto District School Board before embracing early retirement. She looked forward to focusing her time on her family, art projects, mah-jong, and baking. Tolsa was also excited to volunteer in her community. Now, almost 20 years later, she is still a valued member of our volunteer team and has generously contributed more than 2,000 hours of service.

“NYGH was only five minutes away from home, and they were a familiar friend who had treated me and my family with warmth and kindness. It made me want to be part of it, so when I could, I joined the volunteer program,” said Tolsa.

Prior to the pandemic, Tolsa volunteered with the Critical Care unit. She shared her deep administrative skills, supporting various special projects. As Volunteer Services resumed programming, Tolsa did not hesitate to take on a new opportunity at the Diabetes Education Centre (DEC) located at our Outpatient and Community Services Centre (Champagne Drive site).

Tolsa’s assistance in calling patients to remind them about their upcoming appointment at the DEC has been an enormous help. Tolsa repeatedly goes beyond providing patients and our staff team with exceptional service. We all deeply appreciate her dedication and professionalism.” said Milijana Kecman, Clinical Team Manager.

Tolsa makes 35 to 50 patient reminder calls during her weekly shift, bridging important appointment information between the Centre and the patient. Patients repeatedly express to her how they value this service.

According to the Unit Secretary at DEC, Tolsa is dependable and wholeheartedly applies herself to her volunteer tasks.

Understanding the impact of volunteer work increases volunteer engagement and retention. Tolsa feels her volunteer work at the DEC is making a difference, and she is right.

According to the Unit Secretary at the Complex Care Diabetes Centre, it is truly a pleasure to work alongside Tolsa. Her kind-hearted nature, cheerful outlook, and willingness to help, tremendously benefit our patients, staff team, and program.

Tolsa, thank you for ensuring people come first in everything you do!
