North York General (NYGH) and Infrastructure Ontario (IO), in partnership with the Ontario government have taken an important step towards breaking ground on an advanced New Patient Care Tower with the release of the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to form a project team.

The New Patient Care Tower is part of NYGH’s largest expansion in its 56-year history and will increase its capacity to serve a highly diverse and growing population that is projected to exceed 500,000 in 10 years.

The RFQ is the first step in the process to select a team to deliver the project. Submissions will be reviewed to shortlisted teams with required design and construction experience and the financial capacity to deliver on a project of this size and complexity. Shortlisted teams will be invited to respond to a Request for Proposals (RFP), which is expected to be released in the summer of 2025.

Once complete, the Tower will include 11 new floors of patient care spaces and two levels of underground parking. The Tower will connect to NYGH’s existing building, ensuring seamless integration between new and current facilities. The expanded hospital facility will be located right across the street from NYGH’s groundbreaking 528-bed Long-Term Care Development that is planned to be built at 4000 Leslie Street and connected to community-based services delivered by NYGH and partner organizations across North York.

The Tower will house up to 317 private patient bedrooms, expanding NYGH’s inpatient capacity by approximately 100 net-new beds. In addition, it will provide a leading-edge space for specialized services including a large, modern Emergency Department, expanded Critical Care and Surgery Programs, and a comprehensive Birthing Centre, including a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The Tower will focus on designing healing care environments that promote exceptional patient, visitor, and staff safety, experiences and wellness. As part of the design, leading sustainability models, including the Canada Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system and the Toronto Green Standard, will be used to guide planning and design.
