NYGH Starting Work to Revitalize Aging Birthing Centre

An OB-GYN and nurse attend to a mother and newborn baby immediately after delivery.

Patients, caregivers and visitors coming to the second floor of North York General Hospital’s (NYGH) General site for maternal and newborn care will notice parts of the floor are now under renovation. This marks the start of vital work that will revitalize NYGH’s aging Birthing Centre space.

NYGH’s modernized Birthing Centre will provide a warm, calming, home-like environment with a multitude of enhanced comfort, safety, security and privacy features for patients and families. Highlights include:

  • renovated rooms to comfortably accommodate labour, delivery, recovery and post-partum care.
  • a new lounge to allow families and support people to convene comfortably and celebrate their customs and traditions.
  • the latest technology for baby and patients monitoring and security, including a state-of-the-art infant tracking system and controlled access to all areas.
  • new furniture and equipment including adjustable bassinets, new fetal monitors, delivery carts and overbed tables.

The renovations will take place in phases and are expected to be completed in 2026. All clinical services will continue during this time.

“This is an exciting time for NYGH because our Labour and Delivery and Post-Partum areas have not received substantial updates for decades,” says Rudy Dahdal, Vice President of Planning, Redevelopment and Clinical Support at NYGH.

“Our Labour and Delivery team is known for its expertise and attentiveness to patient and family needs. These modern physical spaces will support our teams to provide an exceptional standard of comfort and security to all patients, babies and families during a crucial time in their lives.”

The finishes, colours and furniture for the revitalized Birthing Centre were also chosen through consultations with current and former patients and families—reflecting NYGH’s commitment to delivering People-Centred Care and co-designing programs and spaces with the people who use them.

The Birthing Centre renovations are being generously funded by donors as part of a $22 million fundraising campaign led by the North York General Foundation, with $7.3 million raised to date. Philanthropy has helped drive NYGH forward from when the organization opened more than 50 years ago and donor support remains vital to NYGH’s services today.
