Welcoming Dr. Richard Bowry to his new role as NYGH’s Vice President, Medical Affairs, Research and Education

February 10, 2025

North York General is delighted to announce that Dr. Richard Bowry has been appointed as North York General’s (NYGH) next Vice President Medical Affairs, Research and Education, starting April 1, 2025.

Many of us have had the pleasure of working alongside Dr. Bowry since he joined North York General as an Active Staff member of the Department of Anaesthesia in 2012.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, heading up this critical leadership portfolio integrating NYGH’s medical, education and research mandates, Dr. Bowry will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with teams across NYGH.

Dr. Bowry has held several leadership positions at NYGH including Chief of Anaesthesia, Chair of the Credentials Committee and is the current Vice Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee. In addition to his roles advancing clinical quality and medical stewardship, Dr. Bowry is an accomplished leader and advocate for health system quality improvement, teaching, and research.

In the past, he served as a Medical Consultant to the Health Quality Branch for the former Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, during the roll out of Quality-Based Procedures, and more recently has been involved in the Premises Inspection Committee at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

As Medical Director of the Corporate Patient Flow Portfolio at St. Michael’s Hospital from 2008 to 2012, Dr. Bowry led a team that was awarded the national 3M Health Quality Team Award for their QI work to improve ED wait times.

Dr. Bowry has been actively involved in research and teaching residents and fellows. In 2012, he was promoted to Associate Professor at the University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine for Teaching and Creative Professional Activity.

Thank you to Dr. Lloyd Smith for his steady, expert hand over the past 14 months as Interim VP Medical and Academic Affairs. His many contributions, including shaping NYGH’s 10-year Vision and Strategic Plan, have been greatly appreciated.
