Cancer & Me series

Cancer & Me is a video series about the cancer journey.

Cancer affects everyone. In our lives we, or someone we love, will be diagnosed with cancer. Today, doctors and researchers have a better understanding of the causes of cancer so we can work towards prevention. We have the tools and technology to treat cancer early so more people can have better outcomes.

To raise awareness and support for those who are or will be affected by cancer, North York General Hospital, the North York Family Health Team and Cancer Care Ontario have developed the Cancer & Me video series that takes you through the journey: prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment, and the stories of four people diagnosed with cancer.

Cancer & Me: Healthy living makes a difference

Half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy living. It's simple; eating well, being sun smart, limiting alcohol, avoiding tobacco and being active, can help prevent cancer.

Cancer & Me: Screening

In Ontario, there are three screening programs: breast, cervical and colorectal cancer. When cancer is found early through screening, there are better treatment options and better outcomes. With greater awareness of the benefits of cancer screening, we can reduce mortality.

Cancer & Me: Diagnosis and treatment

Cancer is diagnosed through many different ways. Dr. Daryl Roitman, Oncologist at North York General Hospital, explains how diagnoses are made and what treatment options exist. Treatment is determined by the type and stage of cancer and may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

Colorectal Cancer & Me: Suzanne's story

Suzanne's experience with colorectal cancer brought more meaning to her life. Her journey began following a routine check-up, when she took a fecal occult blood test to screen for colon cancer. Suzanne is grateful for the care she received, and the love and support from family and friends. She is optimistic about the future.

Prostate Cancer & Me: Guy's story

A positive attitude and sense of humour helped Guy through his journey with prostate cancer. Living with cancer since 2006, Guy has had surgery, radiation and hormone therapy.

Breast Cancer & Me: Cheryl's story

Breast cancer gave Cheryl the courage to pursue a country music career. In 2008, Cheryl felt a lump in her breast. A mammogram confirmed she had breast cancer.

Palliative Care & Me: Pat's story

Pat wished that by sharing her experience, patients and families will know that palliative care is about finding energy and joy in your day, not focusing on the illness. On February 24, 2014, Pat passed away surrounded by her family.
