The newly created Baruch/Weisz Cancer Centre and renovated Anne Tanenbaum Chemotherapy Clinicopened in April 2019 for patients receiving cancer treatment at North York General Hospital (NYGH).

Thanks to a generous donation from the Baruch and Weisz families and support from our donor community through the North York General Foundation, the Baruch/Weisz Cancer Centre and Anne Tanenbaum Chemotherapy Clinic feature modern, comfortable treatment areas designed to enhance privacy and space for patients and their families.

Ron Baruch, representative of both families and Chair of the North York General Campaign, shared that North York General has cared for both families for over 40 years. “We are blessed to be able to support a world-class cancer centre that facilitates more than 21,000 patient care visits to the oncology clinic each year."

The committee involved with reimagining this critical part of the hospital included front-line health care providers, a Patient and Family Advisor, donors, and experts who work in key areas behind the scenes in health care, such as building services and information technology.

“As a former breast cancer patient at North York General, I know how important it is for a hospital to feel welcoming and calm,” says Margo Twohig, Co-chair of the NYGH Patient and Family Advisory Council. “Every detail, from the paint colour on the walls to the type of flooring, was given careful consideration. When patients and families come to the same space as often as cancer patients, and spend many hours in the same room, it's important that the care environment has a healing aspect to it.”

As part of these exciting changes, NYGH also partnered with ArtWorks for Cancer (AWFC), a not-for-profit foundation that works with hospitals to bring donated works of art to cancer treatment units — transforming clinical areas into warm and hopeful spaces.

Thanks to generosity of AWFC, the Baruch/Weisz Cancer Centre features a variety of beautiful artwork for patients, families and staff to experience.
