North York General Hospital (NYGH) has been ranked the leading community academic hospital in Canada for the fourth consecutive year and the number four hospital across the country, according to Newsweek Magazine’s World’s Best Hospitals 2022 report.

NYGH provides high-quality acute, ambulatory, and long-term care to approximately half a million people across seven sites. With services spanning the life cycle, NYGH specializes in areas including seniors’ care through its Seniors’ Health Centre, geriatric, palliative and transitional care programs, family medicine and mental health care for children and adults.

“North York General is honoured to be named among the best hospitals in Canada and the world again this year,” says Bert Clark, Chair of the Board of Governors, NYGH. “This prestigious award builds on other recent national and international accolades received by NYGH and is a tribute to our team’s unwavering commitment to excellent patient care and service to our community and the generous support of our donors.”

One of Toronto’s fastest growing communities, North York has the highest percentage of seniors in Central Ontario and Toronto, and is home to a diverse population, nearly 50% of whom are immigrants.

“As an organization known for its commitment to continuous quality improvement, it is so important to receive feedback on how we are performing,” says Karyn Popovich, President and CEO of North York General Hospital. “Guided by our Strategic Plan, Thinking Beyond, NYGH is focused on transforming health care for the future through strong partnerships with providers, patients and caregivers, modernizing and expanding our hospital and long-term care services, and promoting an inclusive and equitable environment at NYGH.”

This award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The 2022 awards list can be viewed on Newsweek’s website.

Newsweek and Statista developed a complex methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the ranking. Three data sources were used for the evaluation:

  • Hospital recommendations from peers: an international online survey that included more than 80,000 doctors, hospital managers & health care professionals from 27 countries.
  • Patient experience: surveys measuring patient satisfaction with hospitals.
  • Medical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): patient safety, quality of treatment, and hygiene measures.

The World’s Best Hospitals 2022 ranking lists the best medical institutions across 27 countries: USA, Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, Brazil, India, Australia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Austria, Thailand, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Israel, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Colombia. The countries were selected based on multiple comparability factors, such as standard of living/life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals and data availability.

NYGH has among the three busiest Emergency Departments in the GTA, one of the highest volume single-site birthing centres in Canada and is home to Canada’s only accredited breast cancer program. During the pandemic, the hospital achieved an extraordinary 99.8% score from Accreditation Canada and was named one of Forbes Canada’s Top Employers 2022. A leading academic community hospital, NYGH is affiliated with the University of Toronto. The organization is a preferred choice for medical students and other learners and is at the forefront of applied research addressing today’s most pressing health care challenges.
