Leadership Message

We proudly present North York General’s (NYGH) 2023–2024 Year in Review. Over the year, we turned the page on the pandemic, made great strides on NYGH’s strategic priorities, and saw community support enhance our capital spaces, equipment, and programs. We came through a difficult period strong, united, and ready for the bright future ahead.

The Year in Review recounts just some of our remarkable stories of exceptional care, resilience, and unwavering dedication to our patients, communities, and donors.

Now in its last year, NYGH’s current Strategic Plan, which focused on people-centred care, creating a connected health system, bolstering our leadership in learning and applied research, and investing in our future, has placed the organization in a very strong position.

NYGH’s ranking as Canada’s number one community academic hospital (Newsweek) is another testament to our talented and compassionate staff, physicians, governors, volunteers, donors, learners, and researchers and represents our deep commitment to our communities.

Last year, we began a pivotal period of growth, progress and innovation that will see NYGH work even more closely with our communities, donors, and health care and government partners to achieve a new standard of excellence in patient care. This includes embarking on the most ambitious expansion in our 55-year history. Our 528-bed long-term care development and future New Patient Care Tower will form the heart of a campus of care offering a full range of health services across North York.

As part of our journey, we created “Here for Life”, a moving new advertising campaign that brings the public inside NYGH to see the outstanding and compassionate care provided by our teams during some of the most defining moments throughout life.

Once again, donors are right here with us. In 2023–2024, we exceeded our fundraising goals with vital donations that enabled $16.9 million to be granted to the hospital to purchase life-saving equipment, revitalize our care spaces, and lead research that is shaping health care at home and abroad.

Through a relentless focus on improving the care experience, NYGH continued to have among the lowest wait times in Ontario for treatment in the emergency department, cancer care, and key surgeries.

Serving one of the fastest growing areas with the highest concentration of seniors in Toronto, NYGH is working hard to offer new and expanded services to meet diverse community needs.

In this report you will read about new services enabled by the support from our donor community including our new Ambulatory Minor Procedures and Mental Health Services Units in the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency Department, and our Endoscopic Ultrasound System, in addition to other accomplishments such as new Reactivation Care Centre beds, and digital health solutions which are providing patients with the right care, sooner.

Last year, we continued to work with partners to make community care more accessible and seamless. Our leading practice Ontario Health Team, North York Toronto HealthPartners, is being supported by the Ministry of Health and Ontario Health to accelerate our efforts to integrate health care across North York.

NYGH also continued to foster greener practices and a more equitable and inclusive environment for everyone. We would like to recognize the staff, physicians, learners, and volunteers who are creating a better future through their participation in our EDI resource groups, Diversity Council and NYGreen strategy.

We would like to thank everyone in our North York General community, our donors, and partners for their extraordinary commitment to our patients and communities. We look forward to reimagining health care together in the years ahead.

Here For Life Campaign

So many of life’s most defining moments happen at a hospital: having a baby, requiring emergency care, receiving a diagnosis, having surgery, regaining independence and quality of life, beating an illness, or saying farewell to a loved one.

And so many of these moments happen in the blink of an eye. On April 8, 2024, North York General unveiled our exciting new awareness and advertising campaign “Here for Life”, with a compelling video and real-life imagery of NYGH in action across various media platforms. With input from across NYGH, and from patients, community members, donors and partners, the campaign brings it back to the basics of why we’re here and what we stand for — to provide exceptional care and unmatched kindness to patients and their families in some of their most life-defining moments, from birth and throughout life.

The new “Here for Life” messaging represents this along with our promise to help our communities be as healthy and independent as possible at every life stage. As we prepare for the largest expansion in NYGH’s history and set a new standard of excellence as a community academic hospital, our new campaign will raise awareness for NYGH. Our goal is to deepen our connections with patients and communities, inspire support, and secure vital donations to help fund our exciting growth plans.
