A Better Tomorrow
Last year, NYG marked important milestones toward our goal of transforming our multi-site campus to meet the needs of our growing and aging population at every life stage. At the heart of our reimagined campus is our landmark New Patient Care Tower being built at our current hospital site and new Long-Term Care Development being constructed steps from the hospital. In addition to core funding from the Government of Ontario, philanthropic support from the community will be vital to realize these ambitious growth plans.
Long-Term Care Development
Last fall, our former administrative building at 4000 Leslie St. was demolished to prepare for the construction of our visionary Long-Term Care Development, anchored on a 528-bed LTC home, one of the largest in Ontario.
In addition to the groundbreaking LTC home, the Development will feature a Seniors Community Hub for North York that will bring together seniors focused health and wellness services for both residents in the LTC home and community members in one accessible location.
We are very excited to work with the Government of Ontario and our donor community to expand access to LTC in the province.

New Patient Care Tower

NYG and the Government of Ontario marked a crucial milestone in January 2025 with the release of the Request for Qualifications (RFQ), step one in the process to select the team that will deliver our new Tower project.
Once complete, the Tower will include 11 new floors of state-of-the art patient care and will connect to NYG’s existing hospital, ensuring seamless integration across the expanded hospital.
The Tower will provide a cutting-edge space for a large, modern Emergency Department, expanded Critical Care and Surgery Programs, and a comprehensive Birthing Centre. Digitally integrated, sustainability-focused spaces will support personalized care for all patients, including those with complex needs.
Revitalizing our Care Spaces
While we continued to pursue the most ambitious modernization and expansion in NYG’s history, we rejuvenated key hospital areas to support our teams to deliver world-class care. The signature project launched last year is our Birthing Centre revitalization, made possible by our generous donors as part of a $22 million North York General Foundation campaign.
Co-designing our Birthing Centre with Patients and Families
A baby’s birth is a joyful event. To make this special experience even more comfortable for birthing patients and their families, NYG is revitalizing its Birthing Centre.
NYG is one of Ontario’s largest single-site birthing centres, bringing 4,526 babies into the world in 2024-25. However, the hospital’s Birthing Centre has not been updated for decades. While NYG’s New Patient Care Tower will include an expanded Maternal Care Centre, the hospital identified a need to modernize and rejuvenate the current Birthing Centre now to better serve North York’s diverse and growing families.
Thanks to our donor community’s generous ongoing support, our Birthing Centre spaces will reflect the same warmth, excellence, and compassion that North York General has long been known for.

We realized that the physical environment no longer matched the quality of care we are delivering. So, we put together a proposal to the NYG Foundation to support a revitalization of the Birthing Centre. This renovation was co-designed with patients and families. It was a highly consultative exercise that focused on patient needs and created personalized experiences that are anchored on what matters most to patients and their families, while being sensitive to the cultural and religious diversity of our community.

Protecting Health Care for Future Generations
NYG is committed to embedding environmental, financial and social sustainability into every facet of our operations. This contributes to better clinical outcomes and staff and patient wellbeing, but also future proofs our services while contributing to a healthier planet. Our capital expansion is a unique opportunity to reduce NYG’s carbon footprint while building resilient, efficient and financially sustainable facilities and systems.

Through our NYGreen initiative, we made important strides to reduce our environmental impact in 2024/25.
775
tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions saved
NYG has reduced overall usage in electricity, natural gas and water and saved over 775 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere – equivalent to the annual energy usage of 104 homes.

NYG became the first hospital in Canada to receive the Best Workplace for Commuters certification in recognition of our green commute programming.

Leading sustainability models, including the Canada Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system and the Toronto Green Standard, will guide planning and design of the New Patient Care Tower.
