Family and Community Medicine
At North York General Hospital, we know that a trusted family physician is at the centre of your health care. Family physicians coordinate your care, helping to make sure you and your family get the care you need, when you need it, in the right setting, whether in the hospital or beyond its walls.
Many family physicians to serve you
North York General has one of the largest complements of family physicians in a Canadian hospital, with 196 active physicians in 2017–18. They provide care from their private practices in north central Toronto and southern York Region. Family physicians work in partnership with our hospital team to offer patients integrated care. Many family physicians also work in various areas of the hospital, including obstetrics, palliative care, emergency services, and surgery.
Strong academic links to the University of Toronto
A leader in community health, North York General is a community teaching hospital with strong academic and research links to the University of Toronto. We are passionate about educating future physicians and offer an undergraduate and postgraduate program. See here to learn about the Rudy and Rita Family Medicine Teaching Unit.
Innovators in family health
Our family physicians are recognized innovators in developing and implementing new models of primary health care (the patient’s first point of contact with a doctor or a health care team).
The Family Health Team helps give our community better access to basic primary health care services. It is also a leader in providing more comprehensive services in chronic disease management, health promotion and disease prevention. Our Family Health Team is composed of physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers, mental health workers and other allied health professionals, depending on the needs of patients and their families.
Community-based research
An exciting aspect of our program is the growth of research in family physicians’ offices, since this is where most patients are first seen and receive on-going care.
Family physicians affiliated with North York General are involved in innovative research projects that aim to improve patients’ health and medical care. The projects reflect the very real issues that arise from treating patients in family practices, and thus help to make a difference in early treatment and prevention of illnesses.
Because of the breadth and volume of our services, more and more of the hospital’s physicians are being asked to participate in research projects. The hospital has a Research Ethics Board and protocol.
A partnership with the North Toronto Research Network enables our family physicians to share their research ideas with colleagues from other hospitals.
