Important information for paediatric patients

April 14, 2021

At North York General Hospital (NYGH), nothing is more important than providing the highest quality care to patients.

Ontario is experiencing a very serious increase in the number of people with COVID-19 in the community and in our hospitals.

In order to ensure critical care and hospital (inpatient) beds and resources are available for the most severely ill patients, Ontario hospitals have been instructed to postpone elective surgeries and non-urgent outpatient services and to transfer patients from hospitals that are over-capacity to others that have available resources to provide safe and appropriate care to patients.

As of April 12, GTA hospitals, including North York General, are beginning to transfer paediatric patients requiring an inpatient stay to SickKids. This is a temporary measure until the province is able to bring COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations down significantly.

Some groups of patients will continue to be admitted to NYGH during this time. Specifically, paediatric patients with eating disorders, select child and adolescent mental health patients, and newborns requiring admission for jaundice. At this time there will also be no change in admissions to the Mother and Baby Unit and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit on 7North.

Parents should also know that the NYGH Emergency Department continues to be open for children and adolescents requiring emergency care.

Please be assured that patient care will not be impacted as a result of the transfer and NYGH will work with our colleagues at SickKids to support our patients throughout the transfer process.

We thank you for your understanding as we work to care for our community during these unprecedented times.
