North York General Ranked Canada’s Number 1 Community Academic Hospital for third year
Newsweek’s ranking names NYGH among top 5 hospitals in Canada and top 100 globally
TORONTO – For the third year in a row, North York General (NYGH) was ranked the number one community academic hospital in Canada and one of the top 5 hospitals overall in the country. This prestigious award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The awards list can currently be viewed on Newsweek’s website.
“With the onset of COVID-19, healthcare delivery organizations around the world were collectively faced with one primary challenge: How to effectively deliver quality healthcare to all patients, regardless of the entry point into the system, while protecting the well-being of non-COVID-19 patients and our workforce,” said Samuel Elfassy, Chair, Board of Governors NYGH. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication, skills and commitment of all our caregivers, who have one singular focus – the patients they serve.”
The hospital has been serving its growing community since 1968. Today, NYGH provides a range of acute care, ambulatory, and long-term care services across seven sites to approximately 400,000 people in North York and to populations beyond who come to the organization for care.
“The NYGH team is proud of this recognition by health care authorities from around the world,” said Karyn Popovich, President and CEO, North York General Hospital. “NYGH is an exceptional place, where everyone from our healthcare professionals on the frontlines, to leaders, to learners, to volunteers is united in our purpose to make a world of difference for our community and patients. The generosity of our donor community also has an undeniable impact in caring for our patients and their families.”
Newsweek and Statista developed a complex methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the ranking. Three data sources were used for the evaluation:
- Hospital recommendations from peers: an international online survey that included more than 74,000 doctors, hospital managers & health care professionals.
- Patient experience: surveys measuring patient satisfaction with hospitals.
- Medical KPIs: patient safety, hygiene measures, and quality of treatment.
The World’s Best Hospitals 2021 recognizes the best medical institutions across 25 countries: USA, Canada, Germany, France, UK, Switzerland, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Israel, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Thailand, Italy, Brazil, India, Spain, Mexico, Poland, Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
NYGH has earned a reputation for top tier acute care and specialized services. Renowned for its high standard of care, the organization achieved an extraordinary 99.8% score from Accreditation Canada in October 2020 during the global pandemic and is home to Canada’s only accredited breast cancer program. The hospital is a top performer in Ontario in wait times for surgical care, cancer treatment and emergency services and has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the GTA and among the busiest single-site birthing centres in Ontario.
NYGH is a preferred choice for medical students and other learners and is at the forefront of applied research that addresses some of the greatest challenges in modern health care.
