North York General Hospital Releases First Year In Review on Green Initiatives

November 19, 2023

It is with great pride that we share our first Year In Review for North York General Hospital’s Environmental Sustainability Committee.

Inside you will learn more about the measures NYGH has taken and our achievements in 2022-2023 to green our practices, inside our walls and in our community.  Key highlights include:

  • diverting more than 115 million single-use gowns, drapes and wrappers from the landfill
  • diverting some 1,500 plastic garment bags from landfill each month through our Surgery Program’s Bring Your Own Reusable Bag campaign
  • reducing our overall usage in electricity, natural gas and water and saving over 340 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere—the equivalent to taking 105 passenger vehicles off the road
  • switching out use of Desflurane – a general anesthetic with exceptionally high green house gas emissions – with cleaner alternatives.

Reducing our environmental footprint is an important part of NYGH’s strategic direction, Investing in a Better Tomorrow and a responsibility we will continue to champion in the years to come.

Thank you to everyone across NYGH and in our community whose efforts are making a positive difference for the environment. A greener tomorrow depends on all of us so let’s keep up the great work!
