North York General Hospital Named Canada’s Number One Community Academic Hospital for 2023 by Newsweek Magazine

NYGH also ranked among world’s best hospitals

TORONTO (March 6, 2023) – North York General Hospital (NYGH) has been named one of the top 100 hospitals in the world and the number one community academic hospital in Canada for the fifth year in a row by Newsweek Magazine.

NYGH provides acute, ambulatory, and long-term care to a local population of nearly half a million and many thousands across the GTA referred here for specialized care. With services across seven sites spanning the life cycle, NYGH specializes in areas including emergency services; seniors’ care through its Seniors’ Health Centre, geriatric, palliative, medicine and transitional care programs; family medicine; paediatrics; mental health and addictions; surgery; cancer care and comprehensive birthing care.

In addition to being the top ranked academic community hospital in the country, North York General is also named Canada’s fourth best hospital overall and moved up to place 55 in the world out of more than 2,300 hospitals.

NYGH is proud to serve one of Toronto’s fastest growing and most diverse communities. Our catchment in North York is home to the highest percentage of seniors in Toronto and over 50% of people living in our area are immigrants and over 50% are part of a visible minority group.

This award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The 2023 awards list can be viewed here. Newsweek and Statista developed a complex methodology to ensure the quality and validity of the ranking. Four data sources were used for the evaluation:

• Hospital recommendations from peers: an international online survey that included more than 80,000 doctors, hospital managers & health care professionals from 28 countries.
• Patient experience: surveys measuring patient satisfaction with hospitals.
• Medical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): patient safety, quality of treatment, and hygiene measures.
• PROMs implementation score: based on standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.

The World’s Best Hospitals 2023 ranking lists the best medical institutions from across: USA, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, Brazil, Canada, India, Australia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Austria, Thailand, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Israel, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Colombia and Taiwan. The countries were selected based on multiple comparability factors, such as standard of living/life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals and data availability.

NYGH has among the GTA’s busiest and highest performing Emergency Departments (EDs), including being Ontario’s leading hospital in the provincial ED P4R program (2022 based on our ED wait times adjusted for volumes). NYGH has one of the highest volume single-site birthing centres in Canada and the country’s only accredited breast cancer program. NYGH has more family medicine faculty than any other University of Toronto site and a well-recognized applied research program focused on solving pressing real-world patient care needs.
