Rudy and Rita Koehler Family Medicine Teaching Unit

Affiliated with the University of Toronto, North York General Hospital (NYGH) has a strong history of preparing future physicians, nurses and other health care professionals to work in interprofessional teams in a community academic hospital setting.

Located on the 4th floor of the General site (4001 Leslie Street), the Rudy and Rita Koehler Family Medicine Teaching Unit is part of NYGH's Family and Community Medicine Program.

Interprofessional health team model

The Family Medicine Teaching Unit (FMTU) teaches medical students and family medicine residents to work as part of an interprofessional team that includes family physicians, residents, nurses, pharmacists and social workers. Our team works together to provide the best possible care for their patients.

Patients and their families are seen in the unit by one of the family physicians, similar to a family practice office in the community.

As a teaching unit, students and learners work alongside staff family physicians to gain experience in family medicine team care and support. Students from other health care fields, including pharmacy, social work, nursing etc., gain important real world experience as well by working alongside professionals in their areas of study.
